An Interrupted Broadcast by the Public Interior

The paper is approached through Saidiya Hartman’s method of Critical Fabulation. It’s setting is inside a Non-European 1951 (NE51/9) house in Mlungisi township, on the eve of intensified apartheid surveillance in 1985, where a family gathers in their improvised lounge to rehearse ordinary life under extraordinary constraint. Prayer meetings become whispers, furniture is rearranged into a civic forum, and a state-sanctioned radio broadcast slips across temporal registers, carrying with it the voice of a 19th-century mission station. What unfolds is not simply a narrative device, but an analytic method: a “public interior” through which colonial and apartheid spatial regimes can be read, interrupted, and re-authored. The radio play becomes a conduit through which two architectures confront one another, the fortified missionary settlement of the 1800s and the provisional township dwelling of the 20th century, revealing how each organizes life, death, and futurity.

By embedding this historical confrontation within the intimate, improvisational space of the NE51/9 lounge, the paper extends its argument that Black spatial practice does not merely endure necropolitical conditions, but actively produces alternative publics and temporalities within them. The broadcast, and its eventual rupture, stages the continuity between missionary discipline and apartheid spatial control, while simultaneously exposing the limits of their authority through moments of mistranslation, refusal, and affective dissonance. In this way, the Sandile home does more than host a story; it becomes a site of epistemic negotiation, where imposed narratives of progress, salvation, and order are unsettled by the very life-worlds they sought to contain.
